Deborah Williams, chief executive of the Creative Diversity Network, said:

“Despite advances, it’s clear from the Diamond data that the UK TV industry has a long way to go before it is genuinely representative of its viewers, and particularly in the off-screen and senior working opportunities it offers to people from different ethnic backgrounds.

“While we applaud the efforts broadcasters and producers have made to improve on-screen representation, the industry must match this by taking meaningful and sustainable action to increase off-screen diversity.”

This report expands on the findings and analysis published in CDN’s Diamond – the Third Cut report.

Diamond is an industry-wide monitoring system that collects diversity data from people who are making new UK-originated content across 30 channels for the five main broadcasters – BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Paramount, and Sky. Its purpose is to understand who is making and appearing on television programmes, and whether programme makers represent their audiences.
